The Centre for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees (CARAD) provides practical and essential welfare, advocacy and volunteer support services and innovative social enterprise opportunities to people seeking asylum, refugees and detainees. It is highly responsive, flexible and dynamic in empowering people to advocate for their rights, connect with their community and live with dignity. The initial $100,000 grant from Impact100 in 2017 enabled CARAD to launch the Fare Go Food Truck. Fare Go is a social enterprise staffed by refugees and asylum seekers, catering at markets and events around Perth. Serving up delicious cultural comfort food, Fare Go brings the opportunity to eat, share and connect while empowering refugees and asylum seekers through employment. The $50,000 grant CARAD received from Impact100 in 2020 enabled us to expand our Fare Go program and create Australia’s first social enterprise school canteen! Expanding our operation into the school canteen has enabled us to provide more opportunities for people seeking asylum to earn an income and become connected and valued members of the school community. Fare Go provides food for 3 school campuses, while continuing to operate the food truck and cater for community events. Impact100 empowers organisations to be innovative, creative and bold so that together we can make tangible positive difference in the lives of people in Western Australia. The support we have received from Impact100 goes beyond the funding. We know that we have a plethora of skills and knowledge from a whole group of people who want to help make our project a success.
