The H.L. Neblett Community Center meets the cultural, educational, moral and social welfare needs of the community by providing a full-service childcare and after-school programming for families in a highly diverse and low-income area of the city of Owensboro. We provide children with breakfast, lunch, a snack and dinner daily.
Our recreation department offers a state-of-the-art fitness center with free admission to the community, a full court for basketball, a game room and programs such as sewing and a photo club. Mature adult programming includes holidays and special events so they may socialize with their neighbors. There is a standing invitation at the center, “C’mon, we’re here for you.”
Impact100 has been a true blessing in our community. The Neblett Center was a grant recipient in 2010, 2015 and 2020. Each grant has allowed us to provide better service to our community and families. We now have a security system that protects our children from harm; a portico that covers our daycare entrance. We house a multi-purpose resource-learning center and a van that allows us to transport our school-age children, and mature adults. The 2020 Impact100 award will create Western Academy at The Neblett, a two-classroom unit to house Saturday programming for African-American boys in 3rd-8th grades. This facility will provide extra space for meetings and learning opportunities.
There is something about the ladies at Impact100 that makes you feel at home. We’ve cried together, we’ve shouted together and we are thankful for the generosity of their members. This is not corporate America, nor is it city or state government, but ladies who decided to give $1,000 so they can be impactful in the community where they live.
