Treasure Coast Food Bank is the largest hunger relief organization on Florida’s Treasure Coast, providing the community each year with millions of meals through robust programs and partnerships with 400 charitable organizations. Our programs not only solve the immediate problem of hunger but help individuals gain long-term food security, better health, and selfsufficiency. Food deserts are areas where people cannot easily access affordable, nutritious food due to lack of grocery stores or public transportation limitations. Food deserts exist in unexpected places – even seaside communities of relative means. Impact100’s grant made it possible for us to launch our Market Fresh on the Move program. Housed in a food truck equipped as both a mobile market and kitchen, it enables people in food deserts to shop for highquality, nutritious groceries within walking distance from their homes. The program is expected to provide 200,000 meals during its first year of service. Additionally, the Market Fresh on the Move program brings a benefits specialist to help people enroll in SNAP as well as nutrition education and healthy cooking demonstrations from the on-board kitchen. It provided additional locations for our Summer Meals program, filling in more gaps in the community’s ability to access nutritious food. In the simplest of terms, Impact100 “gets it.” Impact100 Indian River saw the vision of how an unconventional program could have an immediate impact. It’s a group of women from very diverse backgrounds coming together with a collective vision to transform their community. Members are very knowledgeable about existing organizations and programs in Indian River County, and this informs their approach to funding new and innovative ideas.
